David Ayer, director of 2016's Suicide Squad, says he likes the old-school vibe and look of James Gunn's upcoming sequel, The Suicide Squad.
David Ayer, director of 2016's Suicide Squad, had some kind words for James Gunn, director of the upcoming sequel The Suicide Squad. Gunn's film won't directly continue Ayer's storyline but will feature some of the same characters. Ayer was offered a chance to direct a sequel to his film but passed on the opportunity.

Soon after Suicide Squad's release, Ayer was announced as the director of Gotham City Sirens, a project that has since been put on hold. Ayer apparently didn't have the easiest time working on Suicide Squad; there were reports of studio interference and the film was not well-received overall, though Ayer maintains that he is proud of his work. He's also started a Twitter movement to #ReleaseTheAyerCut, a director's cut of the film which he believes is superior to the theatrical version. Even though Ayer's Suicide Squad had its difficulties, he remains positive about the future of the franchise.
After DC unveiled a behind-the-scenes look at Gunn's The Suicide Squad at DC FanDome, Ayer reached out to Gunn on Twitter. Ayer told Gunn, "I’m just a fan. I knew you were going to crush it - but seeing you went old school with the looks and vibe - tells me it’s going to be insaaaane." In the featurette, producer Peter Safran describes the film as "a gritty 1970s war movie combined with the brilliance of James Gunn's characters and comedy." Safran's comments about the 1970s vibe support Ayer's statement about the movie's old-school look and the "Roll Call" video that introduced the film's characters has a classic comic book style, too.

This isn't the first time Ayer has publicly complimented Gunn's work. Over the past several months, Ayer's maintained his enthusiasm for Gunn's vision, expressing confidence that it will be something special. For his part, Gunn has been equally effusive about Ayer, saying that Ayer has been hugely supportive of his work. Gunn's even voiced his support for releasing the original Suicide Squad's Ayer Cut before his movie comes out.
Overall, it's nice to see artists supporting other artists, especially when they're working on projects with overlapping material. It's not uncommon for writers and directors to publicly condemn interpretations or continuations of their work and seeing Ayer buck that trend is a breath of fresh air. Something similar happened with Matt Reeves and Zack Snyder swapping compliments about each others' work with Batman in their respective films. The positivity surrounding The Suicide Squad is already giving Gunn's film a leg up when it comes to fan reception and, though it'll be quite a while before critics weigh in, it seems like the movie is on a good course.
