movie will finally release next week. It's been plagued by release date delays, most recently due to the coronavirus. However, even before that, the film was affected by planned reshoots that didn't end up happening, as well as Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. What's more, even when the movie finally releases, it won't be doing so under ideal circumstances. Many theaters across the country remain closed, and a large number of moviegoers still don't feel safe going to the theaters that are open. However, Disney is moving forward with the release of
The New Mutants regardless, likely hoping the long delay will bring people out.
The film will focus on the titular Mutants and is considered an X-Men movie, though it's only the second to be released by parent company Disney, following Dark Phoenix. It stars Game of Thrones actor Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma), and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), among others. At this point, more attention has arguably been paid to The New Mutants' journey to release than its' plot. However, the film's horror elements are exciting and should mark an interesting departure for the superhero genre.
Though The New Mutants features classic Marvel characters like Wolfsbane, Magik, and Cannonball, one, Magma, isn't a part of the film. Per CBR, Boone discussed this recently, explaining some comic storylines had to be parred down: "It's why we chose not to focus on a character like Magma. Because she comes from, like, an ancient Roman world that still exists in the Amazon somewhere now, and it was like, 'Yeah, I'm not gonna do that.'"
It's likely other filmmakers have run into the same issue with Magma, as she's never appeared in live-action. However, there is a reference to her in X2: X-Men United, when her real name, Amara Aquilla, appears on the Department of Domestic Security and Defense's computers. Magma's powers also may have played a role in Boone's decision, as she can manipulate lava. Though she has adjacent powers too, that particular one wouldn't have fit in very well in The New Mutants, especially with its focus on horror.
Now that Disney is in control of the X-Men characters, it seems unlikely Magma will appear in live-action anytime soon. The studio plans on taking its time rebooting or introducing characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it would be exciting to see Magma realized in live-action at some point, even if that won't happen in The New Mutants. She's an important Marvel character and deserves to get her due onscreen eventually.
