Whether you’re trying to conceive now or just thinking ahead and wanting to best prepare your body for optimal fertility, we know the journey can feel a bit dull or mysterious at times…

We hear questions like this all the time:

“What can I eat to boost my chances of conception?”

“Do I need to worry about my diet if I still have to take the IVF or IUI route?”

And the answer is that your diet has a huge impact on your fertility, but rather than “worry” about it, educate yourself and get proactive! You can boost fertility with food! How you eat and how you treat your body now will affect your fertility journey, whether it’s natural or medically supported.

To get you started, here’s a spice you might already have in your pantry that will support your reproductive health and boost your chances of getting pregnant!

What is it? Turmeric!

This warming and bitter spice has been clinically proven to improve the vascular health of the ovaries, as cited by Dr. Drew Tortoriello of the SHER Institute for Reproductive Medicine. It is also powerful in decongesting the liver and acting as a natural anti-inflammatory, which are both important for your hormonal health.

Ways to use turmeric:

  • Use the ground, dried turmeric spice on your eggs, sweet potatoes, or in soups or stews
  • Get a supplement like Turmeric Force by New Chapter
  • Juice it! You can buy the whole turmeric root (looks similar to ginger root) and make a juice – check out Tera Warner’s recipe here, or purchase our favorite pre-made Turmeric Juice here.

My favorite way to use turmeric is in spiced milk before I go to bed. It helps me unwind from my day and it is so good for you. Here is the recipe if you are interested in giving it a try. It is truly yummy. It is an Ayurveda recipe.

1 cup organic whole milk
5-6 strands saffron
1 tsp organic cane sugar (I do 1/2 tsp of sugar to minimize the sugar.)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
2-3 green cardamom seed
cinnamon pieces

Add the 1 cup of organic whole milk to a pot.
Gently crush the saffron strands between your fingers and add to the milk. Heat the
mixture for 2 minutes.
Add all the other ingredients and bring to a boil.
Remove from the heat just as it boils.
Strain the mixture and enjoy it warm and fresh
This is an excellent recipe using milk and can be used throughout the year with some
variation of spices depending on the season. Milk prepared and consumed this way is
easy for digestion and can be had as a meal in itself. Those with challenged digestion
or increased phlegm can add four parts water to one part milk and boil to reduce it to
one part.

Thanks for sharing, Claudia!

One tip I’d add –
For the sugar/dairy sensitive gals out there I’d recommend substituting with almond milk and stevia or agave nectar.

Agave and tumeric are both uterine stimulants.
I’m not a professional, so don’t take this as advice, but if one is trying to conceive, it might make sense to avoid tumeric during implantation, and benefit from it the rest of the cycle.

My husband and I are getting IUI soon. I’ve been taking turmeric to help with inflammation, cleansing the liver, shrinking fibroids etc. but I hear that it can also have a contraceptive effect. At what point should I stop taking it and if I get pregnant should I discontinue use? Thanks for your great advice. Shell

If you get pregnant, definitely discontinue use.
Give it a few weeks before the IUI just to be safe 🙂

Good luck!

My husband and I really want a baby but I have 2 fibroids and my hormones are constantly unbalanced. Sometimes my period skips a month. I started using a lot of tumeric in my cooking but wanted to know the best way and times during my cycle to consume it because I have heard that while it helps with conception it also acts as a contraceptive.
