I’m not a lesbian and I’ve always had the right to get married, but to see the right to marry extended to every adult in the United States just makes me happy and gleeful. I love being around happy couples and always enjoy going to a great wedding.
Romance, bliss and happiness aside, there are other reasons why I’m relieved that the US Supreme Court has finally ruled in favor of same-sex marriage.
While same-sex marriage has been legal in some states over the past few years, it has presented some Helter-Skelter inconsistencies of rights of gay and lesbian couples from state to state.
For instance, a same-sex couple could be legally married in certain states, but if they wanted to move to Michigan, forget it. While same-sex couples were entitled to file joint federal tax returns, they couldn’t file joint state returns. They couldn’t adopt children either. Yet gay and lesbian people could also serve our country in the military and still had to pay taxes … just like every other adult.
Michigan had been behind the pack in legally accepting same-sex marriages because 59% of voters in 2004 voted in favor of a state constitutional amendment that banned same-sex marriages. And by god, our state governor and leadership had stood behind that constitutional amendment, even after the US Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013.

It’s been pitiful to see my state’s Republican leaders invest so much time, energy and money into defending such a ludicrous law, a law that strips people from rights most people have. What a majority of people want doesn’t make it right.
There have been “religious” people who have stood behind anti-same-sex marriage laws because they have felt they’re what God says is right … or at least the way they have cherry picked passages in the Bible that have said so. Yet there’s no proof that God has ever existed as a person, even if he supposedly knocked up and never married a virgin who bore him a son. God has never been a US citizen or served in public office.
These “religious” people cry, whine and complain that their religious freedoms have been stomped and trampled on. Yet they refuse to recognize that their Christian god is not other people’s Christian god. They refuse to recognize that some people believe in other higher powers or don’t believe in a higher power. They fail to recognize that freedom of religion is right to believe in any form or faith, organized or not.
Furthermore, religious freedom does not grant the right to strip other people of rights. Freedom of religion is about protecting personal choices pertaining to faith and spiritual beliefs as well as the freedom to not believe in a higher power.
I hope this is the last time I get on a soap box about this topic. I’m in the mood to celebrate. Is anyone having a wedding they’d like to invite me to?
