When think of video poker, you might think of it as one of the newer categories of games as compared to other classic games. However, it is an awful lot older than you might think. Its modern manifestation is as popular as it first was when they first appeared in casinos way back when.
It might come as a surprise but it can be argued that video poker is in fact older than slot machines. In 1891, in Brooklyn, New York, Sittman and Pitt produced a machine that had card symbols printed on five drums. Pulling a lever would produce a poker hand that would be utilized to decide prizes. This machine might well have been the origin of modern slot machines.
In the '70s, true video poker hit the scene. It began with Dale Electronics' Poker-Matic in 1970. Even though players were at first suspicious of the machines since they were unfamiliar with the electronic mechanisms, they soon became wildly popular as people became more accustomed to them. By the 1980s, video poker machines could be found almost everywhere, with wild card ranges including Joker Poker and Deuces Wild adding to the attraction. These machines gave players the opportunity to take pleasure in the excitement of poker without having to battle directly with other players. They proved tremendously successful and were a great source of casino profits.
In 1994, Microgaming started to provide online video poker in addition to a diverse range of other online casino games. The success of video poker translated very well to the online world which should come as no surprise as there is very little difference between the live and online manifestations of the game. Today's online video poker machines represent a variety of different poker variations and many include progressive jackpots that can reach well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
